October 6 – Sister Eileen and Sister Mark of the Cameroon Project visited our club. Sister Mark is from Kumbo, Cameroon, a sister city of LaCrosse, WI. Our club has cooperated with the LaCrosse Downtown Rotary Club in providing funds for latrines and handwashing stations at 10 schools in Kumbo. This has increased educational opportunities for children, especially girls. Prior to this, facilities were nearly non existent so girls dropped out of school when they reached puberty. Caledonia Rotary contributed to this part of the project.
Books for Schools is another part of the project. The same 10 schools have received Books for Africa. Distribution of books at the local level is a problem. The next step in this project is to develop a mobile library system for some of the communities. We will be contributing to this project, too.
October 13, 2017 — Tom Bjerke, a Caledonia Rotarian, showed pictures and talked about the humanitarian trip he and his daughter took to Thailand a few years ago. It was a Habitat trip in cooperation with Thrivent Financial to Krabi, Thailand. They built two houses in this fishing village.
October 20, 2017 Kelly Krieg-Sigman presented a taste of Dark LaCrosse, a Radio Show. Proceeds from the Friday, Oct 27, performance will be donated to Rotary Works Foundation.
October 27, 2017 — We went to the Caledonia Public Library for our program following breakfast. Ashley Dress led the group through the process of accessing the RI website to become aware of all the information on that site. We also visited the District and Club websites.
